Toylogic is continuously at work on Nier Replicant remaster and in order to give everyone a sneak peek of the title’s development progress, Square Enix is providing screenshots of the game’s world.
The provided screenshots come in the form of a short video at a little more than just a minute long. Essentially, the video is a teaser trailer for Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487319.
Although the renders shown are probably illustrations used in the designing phase, the depicted images are reminiscent from the original. However, it is also quite telling as to the reason for the emphasis on each highlighted place. That is, a possibility of such areas getting extra attention as part of the remake.
Remake Root
To the uninitiated, Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487319 is a remake of the Square Enix PS3-exclusive title labeled simply as ‘Nier.’ It is also a spinoff series derived from the Drakengard series, which gives most credit to the rather eccentric developer, Yoko Taro.
In Japan, however, the game is split into two halves and was released on two different consoles at the same time.
Nier Gestalt, the same game that got the Western release, was launched exclusively for the Xbox 360. In Gestalt, players take on the role of a middle-aged man on a quest to find a cure to his daughter’s uncanny disease.
Nier Replicant, on the other hand, did not see a Western release. It features a different protagonist in the form of a young boy in a world similar to Gestalt.
The main difference between Gestalt and Replicant is in the protagonist’s relation to the main supporting character as well as the timeline they are in.
Western Debut
Being a remake, the Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22474487319 makes for the game’s first Western release, albeit with a modern treatment. Unless Square Enix is making drastic changes with the remake of the game, it is expected that the game would also be presented quite similarly as the original.
That is, to play the game as set in a post-apocalyptic setting and fighting shades. All to find a cure to the mysterious sickness called the ‘Black Scrawl.’
The buzz around the Nier Replicant remake came abuzz just at the end of March. Part of the announcement also mentions the free-to-play mobile game, Nier: Reincarnation.
Apart from Replicant and Gestalt, Nier has a more recent entry in the series with the Nier: Automata.
