A group of teachers sued Reese Witherspoon and her brand, Draper James, for allegedly “misleading” them.
Reese Witherspoon is one of the celebrities who have remained active on small screens despite the coronavirus crisis. She has increasingly utilized her social media platforms these past few months.
Amid the COVID-19 crisis in the United States, she is reportedly one of the personalities who also lobbied several advocacies to help people in need. However, her most recent advocacy caught criticisms as she now faces a “class-action lawsuit” from teachers, according to TMZ.
Reese Witherspoon, Draper James promoted a “dress giveaway”
Back in April, Reese Witherspoon, alongside her brand, Draper James, announced that a “dress giveaway” to teachers will happen in light of the crisis across the country and the globe. The clothing brand posted a promotional video on Instagram, informing the mechanics of the giveaway event.
Based on the post, the brand gave thanks and praises toward the teachers for “working harder than ever” in educating children. So, in order to show “gratitude,” “Draper James would like to give teachers a free dress,” the post read.
The brand also noted in its post that the validity of the dresses “while supplies last.”

1 million teachers participated in the event
Following the announcement, teachers from various parts of the globe reportedly “bombarded” the Draper James’ website to submit an application form for the giveaway. However, Reese Witherspoon’s brand did not “anticipate the volume of the response,” as per the New York Times.
“We were really overwhelmed. It was way more volume than the company had ever seen. We expected the single-digit thousands,” Draper James’ Senior Vice President, Marissa Cooley, said.
Other publications said that the website “crashed” immediately. As it happened, almost one million teachers reportedly sent an application.
The class-action lawsuit against Reese and Draper James
Against the nearly one million applications, there are only 250 dresses available for the giveaway. Upon learning the details, three women filed a class-action lawsuit against Reese Witherspoon and her brand, Draper James, as per TMZ.
The Big Little Lies star and her brand allegedly “misled” the teachers. As explained, she and her brand reportedly failed “disclose” that they only had 250 dresses, which led them to think that they would all receive dresses from Draper James.
Speaking to Fox News, Draper James’ attorney said that the brand had “only good intentions,” and that the lawsuit is “an unjust attempt to exploit” the brand. “The fact that supplies were limited, such that a free dress could not be provided to every teacher who responded, was disclosed and is no basis for a lawsuit,” Theane Evangelis added.
In the end, though, the lawyer asserted that the brand looks forward to defending the case. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon has not reportedly commented yet on the issue.
