‘Turn Up Charlie’ starring Idris Elba will no longer see the light of day. Netflix has announced that it’s not renewing for season 2.
Netflix released a statement Monday to announce that the Turn Up Charlie will not return for a second season.
The streaming platform did not provide deeper details regarding the cancellation. Instead, they went ahead by saying their gratitude to everyone involved in the show.
“We’re especially grateful to star and executive producer Idris Elba, who turned his passion for DJing into a witty, heart-warming comedy series,” a spokesperson from Netflix said.
Netflix also thanked the executive producers Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero as well as co-executive producers Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito. And for bringing the story to life, Netflix also mentioned the dedication of the cast and crew.
The entertainment service ended their statement with, “We look forward to continuing our relationship with Idris on future projects.”

Possible reason for cancellation
Netflix may not have revealed the reason for cancellation but reports say that it is most likely related to the poor ratings of Turn Up Charlie.
The streaming platform does not release viewership figures. However, they base their renewal and cancellation decisions on “efficiency metric.” They check on the internal viewing data vs. cost and then they review the returns.
A show should be able to retain subscribers or bring in new subscribers in order to be renewed.
Elba hoped for a second season
According to a source, the Luther actor had hoped to renew the series for another season. The series was created by Elba himself and it was a dream role for him because of his big love for music.
Elba’s early career involved running a DJ company with some of his friends before breaking out in television and films. That is why it’s no mystery why the show focuses on the titular Charlie (Elba) who is a struggling DJ.
He then finds a chance to succeed after becoming a nanny to his famous best friend’s bratty daughter Gabby (Frankie Hervey).
The story will have to end now despite Elba hoping for a second run. An insider reportedly said that Elba was working on new ideas but “he couldn’t get it to work.”
Netflix’s decision to cancel the show comes more than a month after it was released in March 2019.
Elba is now currently working on helping fight the pandemic. The 47-year old celebrity was infected by the virus along with his wife. Humbled to be alive, he has now recovered and is planning to begin a UN coronavirus fund for poor farmers.
Interested subscribers can still catch season 1 of Turn Up Charlie on Netflix.
